Walter Edwin Newcomb was born on 2 August 1879 in Parkman, Geauga, Ohio. He and Louise Platt Ruggles were married on 28 April 1906 in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio. He died on 11 July 1945 at age 65 in Chagrin Falls, Cuyahoga, Ohio. He was buried at Knollwood Cemetery in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

Walter owned a 104 acre farm on Bell Street, east of Chagrin Falls. Here he raised over 30,000 blue spruces, some of which remain in 1993. He kept 7 stock ponds where he raised small mouth bass for sale to the State. He enjoyed bird hunting and big-game hunting. He had designed and constructed the brick residence at 19213 Shelburne Road, Shaker Heights OH. Here his wife, Louise, died and his daughter, Mary, raised her family.
