Biography

Samuel Ayer, Capt., died on 29 August 1708.
Capt. Samuel Ayer was slain in his last engagement, before the reinforcement arrived. (by Indians, 29 Aug 1708, with 15 others) He was shot in the groin and being a large robust man, bled profusely. When his son arrived, he was told that his father was killed and the informant pointed him out. He looked at the corpse a while as it lay on the grass all covered with blood. He told the informant, that person could not be his father, for he (meaning the person slain) had on a pair of red breeches and his father didn't own any red breeches. Capt Ayer was one of the Selectman, Deacon of the church and one of the most worthy, active and intelligent citizens of the town. Buried: "Old Burying Ground" Haverhill. In 1847/48 a granite monument was erected over the grave by the Ladies, 6 1/2 feet high. The 4 sides lists the 16 names of the slain, by Indians.
