Fortunatus Sydnor
M, #22628, b. about 1638, d. 1683
Biography
Fortunatus Sydnor was born about 1638 in England. He and Joanna Lettice Lawson were married about 1670. He died in 1683 in Lancaster Co., Virginia. He was probably the Fortunatus Sydnor who as a minor received a bequest of forty pounds sterling from a kinsman, Francis Sydnor of Gray's Inn, London, in 1656. This would indicate that he emigrated ca. 1660. Fortunatus Sydnor had person sources.1 The names and dates of the children of Fortunatus and Joanna Sydnor, apparently the progenitors of all of the Sydnors who later spread throughout the United States, were copied by William Sydnor in an 1804 Bible from an earlier Bible. The 1804 Bible was rediscovered in Hannibal, MO in 1896 by Walter Sydnor, attorney of Ashland, VA, in the possession of Burwell Starke and published in Tyler's Magazine pp. 282-287. The information was subsequently confirmed by Mrs. Addie L. Sydnor of Corder MO, for F. W. Sydnor, F.A.G.S., in 1926. The Bible was later destroyed in a fire" (Sydnor Thompson, "Sydnor of Virginia." Northern Neck of Virginia Historical Magazine, Vol. XX, No. 1, Dec. 1970, pp. 2065-2094. The estate of Fortunatus Sydnor was probated on 15 March 1682/83.
